CSV to Excel: the complete guide

About this tool
PrivateCSV converts a CSV file into an Excel workbook (.xlsx) without the damage Excel does when it opens a CSV directly. ZIP codes like 02134 keep their leading zero, IDs longer than 15 digits keep every digit, text that looks like a date stays text, and accented characters display correctly. Plain numbers still become real Excel numbers you can sum. The conversion runs in your browser and the file is never uploaded.
How to convert a CSV file to Excel
- Choose the CSV file. The delimiter is detected automatically.
- Leave “Detect numbers and true/false” ticked to get numbers you can calculate with, or untick it to keep every value as text.
- Click Convert to Excel and download the .xlsx file.
Example
Values that Excel would alter stay text; plain numbers become numbers.
id,zip,phone,amount,gene
1,02134,0612345678,24.90,MARCH1
2,02139,0698765432,1200,SEPT2id | zip | phone | amount | gene
1 | 02134 | 0612345678 | 24.9 | MARCH1
2 | 02139 | 0698765432 | 1200 | SEPT2When you need it
- Opening a CSV without Excel changing it
- Double-click a CSV and Excel guesses the type of every value: it drops leading zeros (02134 becomes 2134), rounds numbers longer than 15 digits, and turns values such as 1-2 or MARCH1 into dates. In 2020 the HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee renamed 27 human genes, including SEPT1 and MARCH1, partly because Excel kept converting their names into dates.
- Fixing broken accents
- Excel reads a UTF-8 CSV that has no byte order mark with a legacy encoding, so é turns into é. An .xlsx file has no encoding to guess.
- Sending data to people who use Excel
- A workbook opens with a double-click, with columns already sized to their content.
Which values become numbers
- Plain numbers such as 42, -3.5 or 1200 become Excel numbers.
- Numbers with a leading zero (02134), more than 15 significant digits, an exponent (1e5), a thousands separator or a decimal comma (1,5) stay text, because converting them would change them.
- true and false, in any case, become Excel booleans.
- Dates stay text exactly as written: 03/04/2024 is a different day in the US and in Europe, and guessing wrong would silently corrupt the data.
- The header row is always text.
How the workbook is laid out
The data goes into one sheet named after the file. Each column is sized to fit its content, up to 50 characters wide, and empty CSV cells stay empty in Excel.
Limits to know about
- A sheet holds 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns. Larger files are refused with their row count; split them first with the Split CSV tool.
- Text longer than 32,767 characters in a cell is shortened, and the result says how many cells were affected.
- Dates are kept as text, not converted into Excel dates.
- The workbook is built in memory, so files with hundreds of thousands of rows can be slow on phones.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a CSV file to Excel?
Choose the CSV file and click Convert to Excel. You get an .xlsx workbook with one sheet, ready to open in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice or Numbers.
How do I stop Excel removing leading zeros from my CSV?
Convert the file here: values with a leading zero are stored as text in the workbook, so 02134 stays 02134. Inside Excel, use Data > From Text/CSV, then Transform Data, and set the column type to Text before loading.
Why does Excel change some values into dates?
When it opens a CSV, Excel converts anything that resembles a date in your regional format, such as 1-2, 3/4 or MARCH1, and the original text is lost once the file is saved. This converter never turns text into dates.
Why do accents look wrong when I open a CSV in Excel?
Excel assumes a legacy encoding for a CSV without a byte order mark, so UTF-8 characters are misread. Converting to .xlsx avoids the problem, because a workbook stores text in a fixed encoding.
Can Excel open a CSV with more than 1,048,576 rows?
Not in a worksheet: that is the maximum number of rows per sheet. Split the CSV into smaller files and convert each one, or load the data into Excel's Data Model with Power Query.
